INDIAN TRIBAL CULTURE – Unique Customs and Traditions

Indian tribes are distinctly varied from the rest of the country. Despite the various technological advancements throughout the world, the tribal communities have managed to withdraw into a world of their own, following a variety of primitive customs and traditions. Some of these are common beliefs and customs, where others are just unusual rituals.

The Sentinelese tribes are one of the most primitive tribes native to Andaman. They are hostile tribes when it comes to interactions with the world and were found to be fond of buckets, especially those that are coloured red.

The Jarawa tribes of Andaman practice the custom of changing a child’s name after puberty. Elaborate ceremonies are held to celebrate the practice. These tribes also consider deer as sacred and thus, do not hunt them for food.

The Chenchu tribes of Andhra Pradesh follow customs similar to that of the modern society, in terms of marriage. However, the Chenchu youth are free to marry whoever they wish to and there is no form of parental pressure or aggression. Divorce and widow remarriage is also allowed in this community.

The Bhil community of Rajasthan are independent tribes that follow their own set of rules and customs. Women are treated equally in this community. Bhil women practice polyandry and also smoke hookah and consume liquor with men, without being looked down upon.

The Santhal tribes are native to the regions of West Bengal, Jharkhand, Orissa, Bihar and Assam. Santhals do not believe in idol worship and have no temples. Instead they are ghost-fearing and worship local Gods and spirits.

The Khasi tribes of Meghalaya are unique in their lineage and society. These tribes follow a matrilineal society, according to which, women inherit property and surnames are based on the mother’s lineage.

Various other tribal communities practice such unique customs and traditions, however, only a few of them have been explored and discovered due to the disengagement of these groups with the rest of the country.  Tribal communities are of great interest to Anthropologists and Sociologists and are continued to be studied to a great extent.
