CULTURE OF EASTERN INDIA-ANDAMAN AND NICOBAR

CULTURE OF EASTERN INDIA – ANDAMAN ISLANDS

The Andaman and nicobar islands are located in the eastern india in the bay of Bengal . The majority of the population in the Andaman and nicobar islands are tribes. They have their own origin and ethnicity. They establish their own tradition and beliefs. The Andaman and nicobar islands are one of the seven union territories in India.

The island territory of Andaman has become a ‘mini India’, with a large migrant crowd full of diversity, originally from other Indian states like West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Due to the diversity, the festivals celebrated here are also diverse, like Durga Pooja, Diwali and Pongal, all being celebrated with equal fervour.

The folk dances and handicrafts of the tribal people of this land, are preserved and propagated. The handicrafts include shell and pearl jewellery, coconut shell lamps and artefacts made of cane and bamboo. Furniture made of locally available Padauk wood and Nicobaree mats, are amongst the local attractions in handicrafts here.

Andaman and Nicobar culture show a mix of the indigenous cultures of the Negroid and the Mongoloid settlers of the island, as well as a more mainstream culture brought down by the descendants of the early settlers in the island from the Indian mainland.

The migrants also contributed to the culture of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The greatest feature of Andaman and Nicobar Islands culture is the peaceful coexistence of these two strains of cultural lives.
