CULTURE OF NORTH EASTERN INDIA – FESTIVALS AND CELEBRATIONS OF TRIPURA

FESTIVALS:

Kharchi Puja

Garia Puja

Kharchi Puja is the festival of the worship of fourteen deities that is celebrated in July at Agartala. The word Kharchi is said to be a corrupt form of Khya which means earth. Kharchi Puja is, therefore, the worship of the earth - the earth that sustains mankind with all her resources. Ker and Garia Pujas are traditional tribal festivals. Ker is celebrated after two weeks of Kharchi Pooja. A large piece of bamboo when bent in a particular fashion assumes the image of Ker. This was performed by the former rulers for the general welfare of the people. Garia Puja is celebrated on the seventh day of Baisakh.  Sacrifice of cocks is an important feature of the Puja. Another equally important feature is dancing and rejoicing after the Puja.

MARRIAGE:

This is the actual traditional Tripuri marriage system. This includes old customs of negotiations between the families of the bride and the groom through a marriage broker along with the guardians. This is mostly observed among the Tripuris of the Sadar South. Nokkaisa Kaimung is the marriage by exchange. It is done to avoid dowry. Fuisai Tubuo is the type in which the bridegroom pays the bride's parents and buys the bride. Chamari Amar is the type in which the bridegroom leaves his house after marriage and settles down in his father-in-law's house. Rinai is the bride’s traditional wedding dress.

DANCE AND MUSIC:

 Garia dance

Jhum dance

Garia dance is performed during harvest festival Garia Puja. Jhum dance is performed in working place to forget hard labor for a moment. Jhum dance displays life style, mode of cultivation, culture and tradition of the people. Galamuchamo Dance is performed to express their gratitude to the gods for good harvest. Gajan dance is performed in rural areas. In this dance the people dress like god Shiva and goddesses Gauri. They dance house to house and collect rice and money. Sumui is a flute type instrument used by blowing air into it. It is made of bamboo. Lebang-Lebangti is a strange kind of musical instrument that creates a noise like ‘claps’ and ‘twangs’. Chongpreng is a hollowed wood block where strings are attached to create the music.
