CULTURE OF NORTH EASTERN INDIA – TRIPURA
RELIGION:
Hinduism is the
major religion of Tripura. Islam, Christianity and Buddhism are also practised
here. The major tribes such as Tripuris, Reangs, Halams, Jamatia and Noatias
practice similar rituals as the Hindus do. Vaishnavism is prevalent among the
Kalai and Rupini tribes.

Cane and bamboo handicrafts are
famous in Tripura. The land of Tripura produces abundant bamboo and cane which
are used to make different types of Handicrafts like chairs, tables, mats,
hats, bags, hand fans, containers etc. The tribes of Tripura are famous for
handmade clothes. The tribal women are experts in weaving. Handiwork is made by
simple materials such as bamboo, cane, palm leaves etc., Tripura is famous for
Horticulture. Fruits like Pineapple, Orange, Litchi, Lemon etc., are produced
in abundance.

Risa, Rignai and Rikutu were the
traditional costumes of Tripura. It features beautiful artistry of fabrics.
Rignai is the draped skirt worn by women. Every clan in Tripura has their
version of Rignai in terms of designs and patterns. Risa is worn by the bride
during the wedding. Rinai is a traditional cloth of Khakloo tribe women.
Khakloo is a large piece of cloth; women cover themselves with this cloth. The
traditional costume for men is a towel whih is kniwn as Rikutu Gamcha. Men wear
this with Kubai which is a type of shirt.

The traditional food
of the state is Mui Borok. Kosoi Bwtwi is another Tripura cuisine made of beans
and Berma. Panch Phoron Tarkari is a vegetarian dish prepared with a number of
vegetables such as brinjal, pumpkins and potatoes and other add ups like Red
chillies, Bay leaves, Green chillies etc., Panch Phoron is an important Bengali
spice which is a perfect blend of five spices. The another favourite dish of
Tripuris is Gudok which is prepared in young bamboo pipes. Wahan Mosdeng is a
pork dish that is famous among the Tripurian people.
