SOUTH INDIAN CULTURE
SOUTH INDIAN CULTURE
Of
these, South India contributes an important part to the Indian
culture.
South
India is made up of five states, them being, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka,
Tamil Nadu and Telangana and it successfully integrates the cultures of these
states to create an overall characteristic of Southern India while
incorporating the individual differences displayed by each state.
Traditional
clothing in South India includes the unstitched garment that is draped around
the waist and shoulder called the sari that is typically worn by the women,
while the men wear the dhoti which is a non-stitched cloth draped around the
waist and legs. While these are the most common forms of attire in the
countryside that have been prevalent predominantly through the history of
clothing in South India, tailored clothing and western styles of dressing have
grown to become popular in the urban areas.
The
traditional cuisine includes rice as the staple diet with an extensive use of
spices to produce the rich flavour and aroma that characterises South Indian
food. The traditional way of eating involves being seated on the
floor to consume the food which is served on a banana leaf.
Music in South India ranges from rural folk music to the Indian Classical Music of South India known as Carnatic Music. It includes melodious, mostly devotional, rhythmic and structured music. The dance forms of South India include Koodiyattam, Bharatanatyam, Oyilattam, Karakattam, Kuchipudi, Kathakali, Thirayattam, Theyyam, Bhuta Kola and many others.
