CULTURE IN EAST INDIA : WEST BENGAL

India is a home of diverse cultures . Culture in India is something really fascinating. There are so many distinct and unique forms of culture in the Indian subcontinent. Of these, culture in the Eastern part of India is highly adorable and distinctive. The culture of eastern India is called the "UNEXPLORED PARADISE". Eastern India comprises of the Indian states West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chattishgarh, Bihar  and the union territory Andaman and Nicobar islands. 


West Bengal is a dome of culture. People in the state follow their culture strictly even in this trending era of modernisation. West Bengal has its root in the Bengali music, arts , literature, drama and cinema. Kolkata is referred to as the CULTURAL CAPITAL OF INDIA. The Bengali language boasts a rich literary heritage, shared with neighbouring Bangladesh. West Bengal has a long tradition in folk literature. Among other types of theater, West Bengal has a tradition of folk drama known as' jatra'. Kolkata is the home of the Bengali cinema industry, dubbed "Tollywood"popularity.  The Baul tradition is a unique heritage of Bengali folk music, which has also been influenced by regional music traditions. Its lyrics carry influences of the Hindu bhakti movements .Bauls pour out their feelings in their songs but never bother to write them down.

Mask or Mukhosh of West Bengal, as it known has a mysterious history is a true culture of Bengal. Mostly it uses for the Mask Dance, the folk dance of West Bengal. The wearing of these masks is connected with early types of folklore and religion. There is various type of masks made up of clay, wood, sponge wood or shola, pith, paper, metal etc.  Some of the masks came from the Tribal of West Bengal. Though Bengali women traditionally wear the sari and shalwar kameez, Western attire has gained acceptance among younger and professional women. Western-style dress has greater acceptance among men, although the traditional costumes like dhoti, panjabi, kurta, sherwani, pyjama and lungi are seen during weddings and major festivals.


West Bengal shares its distinctive culinary tradition with neighbouring Bangladesh, and also borrows from other Indian states. Boiled rice and roti constitute the staple Bengali food, and is served with a variety of vegetables, fried as well with curry, thick lentil soups, and fish, egg and meat preparations of mutton and chicken, and more rarely pork, duck, lamb and beef by certain groups. West Bengal is famous for its culture and festivals are an inevitable part of this culture. People of different religions and communities perform their religious rituals with festivities. Some festivals are celebrated statewide, while others are local in nature. There are also various other village fairs and seasonal tribal festivals.
" Durga Puja" is the biggest and most important festival of West Bengal.It marks the victory of ten-armed goddess Durga over the buffalo demon Mahishashur and signifies the victory of good over evil. Eid ul-Fitr is most important religious festival for Muslims in West Bengal. The Prayers of Eid are held all over the West Bengal in the Eidgahs or inside the Mosques
Poush Mela held at Shantiniketan in Birbhum district depicts the quintessential Bengali culture. The fair is hosted between 7th and 9th of the month of Poush, near about the time when the present Gregorian year is to bid farewell and preparations are made to welcome the new year, with its new hopes and new promises. Bengali weddings are traditional and it depicts their culture.The significant rituals and beliefs add colours to their followed culture and traditions.

Bengal culture is ancient and beautiful. While the Bengali hindus believe on the most powerful Kali, muslims celelbrate their own religion. The food , literature, attire, festivals, beleifs and fine arts contribute to the unique culture of West Bengal.
